Success Story: A Future Built in Industrial Maintenance

Before enrolling at Symbol Training Institute, Cesar was already working in the maintenance field. While he had gained valuable hands-on experience, he wanted to expand his knowledge, strengthen his technical skills, and earn certifications that would help him advance his career. Balancing work, school, and family was not easy. As a single father, Cesar’s biggest concern was finding the time to invest in his education while still being present for his daughter. Despite the challenge, he decided to take the next step and enrolled in IMT 401 thanks to a grant from the Job Center of Lake County.

At Symbol, Cesar developed a deeper understanding of both electrical and mechanical maintenance. He gained valuable knowledge of electrical systems and controls while sharpening his troubleshooting and mechanical skills through hands-on training and classroom instruction. “The training provided me with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the concepts and equipment used in the maintenance field.” One of the highlights of Cesar’s experience was learning from his instructor, Omar, whose real-world industry experience helped connect classroom concepts to everyday maintenance challenges. The program also provided training in safety, documentation, troubleshooting, and other skills needed to succeed in the field.

After completing the program, Cesar secured a position as a Maintenance Technician at JohnsByrne in Niles, Illinois. The training helped him gain greater confidence in his abilities and opened the door to a better opportunity with increased pay and long-term career growth. “The knowledge and skills I gained through the program helped me secure a better job with better pay, while also giving me a stronger foundation for my career.” Perhaps most importantly, the experience confirmed that industrial maintenance is the career he wants to pursue for the long term. “I enjoy the work and find it rewarding, which is why I am committed to continuing to grow and develop my skills in industrial maintenance.”

Looking back, Cesar says he would tell his younger self not to wait. “Don’t let concerns about time hold you back. The investment in your education will pay off through increased knowledge, greater confidence, and better career opportunities.” When he’s not working, Cesar enjoys spending time with his daughter, whether they’re visiting parks, swimming, attending local festivals, or simply making memories together. Cesar’s story is a reminder that with commitment, perseverance, and the right training, it’s possible to build a stronger future for yourself and your family.

“Start sooner, stay committed, and trust that the hard work will be worth it.” – Cesar
