When Lama arrived in Chicago, she was looking for more than just a job, she was looking for a fresh start.
As a mechanical engineer with experience in manufacturing and design, Lama had already built a strong technical foundation. However, after losing her previous position, she made the decision to relocate and pursue new opportunities in the manufacturing industry. Determined to strengthen her skills and create a stable future, she enrolled in Symbol Training Institute’s CNC 205 program and was funded through a Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership grant.
At Symbol, Lama gained hands-on experience in CNC machining, quality control, precision measurement and manufacturing processes. The practical training and industry-recognized credentials helped her build confidence and prepare for today’s manufacturing workforce.
Today, Lama is working as a CNC Machine Operator at Dexter Magnetic Technologies in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Starting this new career has brought financial stability, renewed confidence, and a sense of accomplishment for Lama and her family. Reflecting on her journey, Lama shares a simple but powerful message: “Believe in yourself, stay patient, and keep learning. The hard work will pay off, and new opportunities will come.”
Outside of work, Lama enjoys spending time with her family, learning new technical skills, reading, and staying active. Through determination, training, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities, she successfully transformed a challenging setback into a promising future.
